Schools & Young Folk

Hi There!
Thank you for looking here. Our Society gets many letters from young people, and I hope this information page will help you with any school project you may be doing. We are interested in the study of all forms of timekeeping, from sundials to quartz clocks, but most of the information here is about mechanical clocks and watches.

Museums are great places to see clocks and watches so have a look at our list of museums in Britain. Try your local museum also, since they probably have some clocks or watches on display.

Visit a library. Clocks and watches come under the Dewey number 681. Your librarian will be able to help if you cannot find this section. Some clock books are expensive so they may be only available in the reference section of a library.

I hope that what you find on this page is useful.

Ideas for Things to Do:

  • Make a sundial.
  • Make a sand glass out of old pop bottles.
  • Get an old clock from a car boot fair and carefully take it apart.
  • Design a clock dial.
  • Design a clock case using old drinks cans.
  • Experiment with pendulums.
  • Find out about Big Ben.
  • Look at public clocks in your neighbourhood.
  • Find Books on Clocks and Watches. (See Library Shelf Mark 681)
